About Gear (you must know some details about the story to understand this, sorry! This is mostly for my irl friends who I've told) :
It is now year 2163. Gear was born on January 1, year 2146, or 33 years after the bomb exploded. She was born with the name Annie Burgess, and was the daughter of Stephan Burgess, the one who invented steam technology. She was raised as a noble lady, but was always taking things apart and figuring out how they worked. She hated the activities that young ladies were supposed to pursue, and preferred to spend her time playing with the town boys or messing with her father's inventions. When she turned 14, her father was one of the richest men in Neo-Amerikka. And it was decided that she was to be married, for diplomatic reasons, to someone she had never met from another country.
Around that time, a large ship flying a black flag from it's middle mast staggered into port. It was the Manta Ray. A tall, dark woman slid down a rope from it's side onto the cool wooden dock. She spoke aloud as she patted the ship's hull. "Oh boy, we're gonna need someone good to fix this." The fourteen year old Gear noticed the ship, and the way it flew with it's steam rockets at uneven powers.... She walked up to the woman, bag packed full of her belongings in hand, and said, "I can fix it." Captain gave her a try, and before she knew it, Gear had been appointed engineer of a real pirate ship.
Full of optimism and guts, Gear loves challenges and difficult tasks. In fights, she uses her terrain and speed to her advantage. Her heavy lead wrench helps her hold her own in an ambush, or a small skirmish, but she can't fight well without a weapon or for very long. She is an excellent marksman and can fix just about anything. Henri is teaching her how to read, but she's not very good. It was not deemed necessary for her to know how to read as a noble lady, so she was never taught. That was the way things were in Neo-Amerikka, and part of the reason she left. Her dream is to invent things and be an engineer on a pirate ship.
