Description

This "speedpaint" ended up taking about 2 hours D: I was really trying to include many different colors in the skintone here... And trying to paint semi-realistically from my head xD;; I dunno if I pulled it off.... Anyway, this is a character from a collab story some of my friends and I are writing for fun~

GAH I worked so hard on this! My realistic is rusty orz

I just love this kind of work. The big, blotchy areas patched together to make excellent form -- it's what Bob Foster is always talking about!

Good work using dark tones in the skin, it's successful. The eyes are rather dead, though; add some shine and darker pupils to present a more appropriate effect. Also, no human's eye-whites are ACTUALLY pure white -- they're closer to a very desaturated yellow. The neck is too pale in contrast to the rest of the form; take the shape of light of the front aspect of the neck and shrink it to provide a cleaner look. The sharp, edgy look of the facial structure and composition is successful! The hair is also fairly good, although unfinished looking. One of my favorite parts of the piece is the curve above the upper lip; that's awesome. I can keep staring at it forever.

Also, pay close attention to your initial form; sure you wanted to speedpaint, but even a speedpaint needs solid under-structure and a clear purpose. The head is sloshy and unsure. At this broad 3/4s angle the left eye would not be that significantly smaller than the right. Was it intentional not to give him eyelashes? The dark shape of the nose is successful.

I also just wanted to congratulate you, Kate, for branching out like this and kicking some butt. Also, if you're looking for inspiration to this kind of piece, check out Gary Kelley's work.
